As we have seen, in his drama Valdez creates a connection between indigenous past, the rich heritage of Spanish Language Theater14, and the history of the Southwest on the one hand and contemporary issues on the other, creating and re-creating Chicano myths relying on mythico-historical heroes and actualizes them in contemporary terms again. "As Valdez delved more and more into the project of connecting an indigenous past to the present, he began to integrate the cultural heritage of Chicanas Chicanos with the mito form" Ramrez 87 ; . The rise of mitos in his plays offered Valdez a new way to educate his audiences and to incorporate new relevant material at will, material that he can use within his "poetic freedom".
