National Surgical Quality Improvement Program NSQIP ; is a quality measurement and improvement tool developed by the Veterans Administration and administered by the American College of Surgeons. Using rigorous data standards and trained personnel, it measures the quality of surgical care and has demonstrated significant improvements in outcomes within the private sector. Participating sites receive comparison reports, specific recommendations for improvement, self-evaluation tools, site visits and best practices. NSQIP information is not yet available to consumers. We would like to thank the hospitals that, through participation in one or more of these programs, have shown their commitment to improve hospital quality, patient safety and consumer transparency. Regence will continue to collaborate with the provider community to ensure performance measurements keep pace with national and local standards and that the results are beneficial to those we collectively serve. Every year, Regence employees celebrate National Doctors' Day to recognize the contributions physicians make in health care and in our community. Regence employees send notes of appreciation to physicians and other health care professionals for the exceptional care given to them and their family members. National Doctors' Day is celebrated March 30 and gives people the opportunity to publicly recognize the many ways physicians impact our lives. This tradition was first observed in 1933 in Barrow County, Georgia on the anniversary of the first use of general anesthetic in surgery. The medical society auxiliary celebrated by mailing cards to local physicians and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. National Doctor's Day is one of two programs we participate in as part of our Physician and Provider Appreciation Program. Physician and Provider Appreciation Week, the second program, will be celebrated this fall during the week of September 24. Our sincere appreciation goes out to all physicians and other health care professionals for the exceptional care you provide to our members. Lucet et al. 65 ; reported a four-year prospective observational study of nosocomial acquisition of extended spectrum -lactamase ESBL ; -producing Enterobacteriaceae in a Paris hospital following the introduction of patient screening and barrier precautions. In the first year, the incidence of nosocomial acquisition of these organisms did not decrease. After refinement and re-enforcement of the use of barrier precautions, there was a subsequent decrease from 0.56 to 0.06 cases 100 admissions over the subsequent three years. Concurrent decreases in the incidence of MRSA and Acinetobacter baumannii nosocomial transmission were also observed. Similarily, Soulier et al. 66 ; reported a 40% decrease in ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae colonization in a gastrointestinal surgical intensive 10.
